I don’t see that men need bank it with the women. She had never been able to discover where her father had hidden his shaving mirror. Bold women certainly existed in the Middle Ages--Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales is evidence of this--but meek women were probably the norm, good Christian family ladies who wanted nothing more than to serve God and have children. Women, she had been taught, who exposed the flesh of their bodies under the eyes of man were in a special catagory of the damned.
